Use of personal data collected

Comments

When you leave a comment on our website, we save not only the data entered in the comment form, but also your IP address and the user agent of your browser to help us detect undesirable comments.

A hash value (anonymised chain) created from your email address may be sent to Gravatar to check whether you use its services. Gravatar’s privacy notice is available here. Once your comment has been approved, your profile photo will be publicly visible alongside your comments.

Media

If you are a registered user and you upload images to the website, we recommend that you avoid uploading images containing EXIF data with GPS coordinates. Visitors to your website can download and extract location data from such images.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our website, we will ask your consent to store your name and email and website addresses in cookies. This is solely for your convenience, so you do not have to enter the same information if you leave another comment later. These cookies expire after one year.

If you have an account and you log onto the site, a temporary cookie will be created to determine whether your browser accepts cookies. It holds no personal data and will be deleted automatically when you close your browser.

When you sign in, we set up a number of cookies to hold your login data and screen preferences. The login data cookies last for two days, and screen option cookies have a lifespan of one year. If you select the “Remember me” option, your login cookie will be kept for two weeks. When you log out, the login cookie is deleted.

When you modify or publish an article, another cookie is set in your browser. This cookie contains no personal data. It indicates only the identifier of the article you have just changed, and it expires after one day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this website may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Integrated content from other websites works in the same way as if the user had visited the other site directly.

These websites may collect information about you, use cookies, use embedded third-party monitoring tools or monitor your interaction with this embedded content if you have a logged-in account on their website.

Data retention periods

If you leave a comment, the comment and its associated metadata are retained indefinitely. This enables subsequent comments to be recognised and approved automatically rather than leaving them in the moderation queue.

When users register on our site, we also keep the personal data they provided in their profiles. All users are able to see, edit or remove their personal data at any time (with the exception of their actual username). Site administrators can also see and edit this data.

Your rights over your data

If you have an account or if you have left comments on the site, you can request a file containing all the personal data we hold about you, including the data you have provided. You can also request the deletion of personal data held about you. This does not include data stored for administrative or legal purposes, or for security reasons.

Disclosure of your personal data

Comments made by visitors may be verified using an automated undesirable comment detection service.
